The pre-kindergarten through eighth grade school for Marana Unified School District is integrating computer, science, technology, engineering and math (C-STEM) into every class and subject taught. It will expose students to practical hands-on lessons, which have direct relevancy to real-world challenges. The kindergarten through fifth grade students are introduced to CSTEM subject matter in a practical manner using experimentation, while grades sixth through eighth have the opportunity to focus deeper on CSTEM concepts that peek their interest. This natural curiosity about the world can develop into a lasting interest in these fields.

The school building design is a celebration of student-driven learning and making. Large, highly visible and collaborative maker spaces line the heart, or the arroyo, of the building, fostering student awareness of the work being done by their peers. All classrooms at each grade level will have direct access to their exterior outdoor learning areas, which allows students to “get their hands dirty” with classroom projects. Common student areas and circulation are crafted to allow for some separation between elementary and middle school students, while maintaining connectivity and a sense of community. The site-responsive building acts as a teaching tool, highlighting the natural ecosystems of the site and respecting the natural landscape.
