This three-building renovation transformed dated classroom spaces into modern labs, open classrooms and unique student gathering spaces. Two of the buildings had multiple classrooms replaced with new classrooms featuring operable glass partitions, flex space and a maker space with a functioning garage door, used for interactive labs and group work. The team utilized the open space beneath the existing library to create a new cafe and hang out space for students. The cafe, which is enclosed with storefront glass, includes a variety of seating and two garage doors, which creates an open, college-like gathering space for students. In order to minimize disruption on campus, CHASSE utilized temp fencing and custom vinyl window graphics to hide construction, as well as minimize trade worker foot traffic during passing periods.
Building E was an existing classroom building with five classrooms. CHASSE demolished the interior space (except for the restroom) and renovated 8,638 SF. Building E turned into six classrooms and a “flex” space, which is a common area between the classrooms. Building E is highlighted by the operable glass partitions in room E2, E4, and E6. In addition, Building E also received a “makerspace” which is used for interactive labs and collaborative group work with a garage door facing the campus allowing more space for the students and for enjoying the great Arizona weather!
Building K was an existing classroom and like Building E! CHASSE demolished the interior (except the restrooms and staff room) and created new science classrooms and labs, in addition to two additional classrooms on the east end of the building. The existing building was 9,992 SF and the addition was 2,637 SF, totaling 12,629 SF of renovations. Building K is the new science building for the campus equipped with three lab rooms, five science classrooms, and a flex room similar to Building E.
Building Y was the existing library at Agua Fria High School. The library was raised on concrete pillars and CHASSE framed underneath the library and created the new Café. CHASSE installed storefront glass around the majority of the Café, along two new garage doors to incorporate an extension of the outdoors inside. The Café is equipped with a warming kitchen and includes both table and booth seating. The area has provided relief to the overcrowded cafeteria and provides a college feel/hangout space for the students and staff.
