Currently entering construction, the New School at Sorrento marks CHASSE Building Team’s second major project with the Maricopa Unified School District. Thoughtfully designed by Orcutt Winslow, the two-story, masonry and steel structure will offer more than 40 classrooms—including dedicated maker spaces and lab rooms—within one continuous building to support efficient circulation and climate control.
The campus prioritizes flexibility and innovation, featuring translucent operable walls, exposed ceilings, and movable furniture throughout. A standout indoor/outdoor amphitheater with a sliding glass wall and an interior auditorium equipped with a pipe grid, curtain system, and projection screen allow for dynamic performances and presentations. A central learning stair within the building provides views to the amphitheater stage, fostering a strong sense of connection and collaboration.
The site includes traditional academic spaces alongside neurodiverse classrooms, a dedicated band room, and a full-sized gym with roll-away bleachers, scoreboards, and basketball hoops. The standalone cafeteria features a warming kitchen, servery, and adjacent food commons space that opens to the learning stair and performance area.
Designed with energy efficiency and student wellness in mind, the school boasts optimal solar orientation, an exterior insulation and finishing system, high-performance glazing, and SEER-rated mechanical systems. Ample daylight floods the building through a glass-fronted entry marked by a prominent metal canopy and school signage. Outside, students will enjoy concrete benches, hardscape, turf play areas, outdoor basketball courts, and full baseball and soccer fields—all situated near an adjacent neighborhood park.
The campus will feature comprehensive wall graphics and security-driven design with integrated lockdown functionality. Once complete, the New School at Sorrento will stand as a forward-thinking learning environment built to serve students for generations.
