CHASSE Building Team recently completed a transformative expansion of the Tumbleweed Recreation Center for the City of Chandler. The project began with the renovation of the existing Child Watch area, which created space for construction to continue while the facility remained fully operational. Crews then relocated all underground utilities—including sewer, water, gas, electrical, fiber optics, and storm drainage—within the footprint of the new expansion. A temporary construction tunnel was also installed to maintain safe access while completing work on the south façade and canopy.

CHASSE took the tunnel experience a step further, working with the City to turn it into an engaging and informative passageway. Along the plywood walls, the team installed large-scale banners showcasing project renderings, stakeholder logos, and the City of Chandler’s branding. To keep the community informed throughout construction, milestone boards were also added—sharing updates on progress, timelines, and what to expect next. It became more than just a path through a jobsite; it was a visual storytelling space that brought the project to life for everyday users of the facility.

Significant improvements were made outside the building as well. The parking lot was repaved and expanded with over 5,000 square feet of additional concrete to improve grading and drainage at the south entry. New drywells and storm drains were installed, and blue lithocrete was added at the main entrance for both aesthetics and durability. Large-scale signage canopies were added to both the north and south ends of the facility, while the entire perimeter site wall was removed and replaced. The landscaping was upgraded with drought-tolerant plants, decomposed granite, and a new concrete curb and sod on the north side of the site.

Inside, the new expansion is designed with top-tier finishes and community-focused functionality. The entry lobby sets the tone with soaring ceilings and a high-end bamboo resin panel feature wall behind the reception desk. Just beyond is the new events hall, Rosewood, featuring a catering kitchen, 85” monitor, 10’ projection screen, and a state-of-the-art lighting system. The lighting control package allows for dimming and color-changing options throughout, offering flexibility for any type of event. The space opens up to a large outdoor patio equipped with speakers that tie into the building’s integrated AV system.

Other new amenities include a game room with dual 65” TVs, pool tables, and dart board areas, and two multipurpose classrooms (Acacia and Juniper) that can be separated or combined based on need—each with independently controlled AV systems. The Bottlebrush Room, designed for arts and crafts, includes ample cabinetry, under-sink clay cleanouts, and a sealed concrete floor for durability.

The Ironwood fitness studio is a standout addition, featuring mirrored walls, ballet bars, a central TRX system, an 85” TV, 10’ projector, and full surround sound. A glass, garage-style roll-up door leads from the studio to a second shaded patio—an outdoor extension of the fitness space, complete with integrated speakers and room for instructor-led stations and continued workouts.

The expansion also introduced four new ADA-compliant restrooms (including an adult changing station), ample storage throughout, dual 60-gallon water heaters, and ADA automatic storefront entry doors. Every detail of this project was thoughtfully executed to elevate the recreation center’s offerings and enhance the experience for the entire Chandler community.
